Break from the heat with a delicious ice-cold treat...

Even the thought of ice cream is enough to conjure dreams of sunny weekend days lounging around in the yard, running through the sprinkler, and taking a break from the heat with a delicious ice-cold treat. While the store-bought stuff is nice, it's not hard to make a batch of really rich, bend-your-spoon thick ice cream without breaking the bank. Just give yourself a day or so to prep.

Make the classic cherries and rum flavored ice cream in your own kitchen.

INGREDIENTS

3 c. Farmer's All Natural whole milk 2 c. Farmer's All Natural heavy cream 1/2 c. sugar 1/4 tsp. Kosher salt 1 vanilla bean 5 large egg yolks 2 c. pitted cherries, finely chopped  1/4 c. brandy 1/2 (0.13- ounce) envelope unsweetened cherry drink mix

DIRECTIONS

  1. Whisk together first 5 ingredients in a large, heavy saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring often, 4 minutes or until sugar dissolves and mixture is hot. Gradually whisk about 1 cup hot milk mixture into yolks. Whisk yolk mixture into remaining milk mixture. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, 8 to 10 minutes or until mixture thickens and coats a spoon.

  2. Pour through a fine wire-mesh strainer into a bowl, discarding solids. Cool completely. Stir cherries, brandy, and drink mix in. Chill 8 to 24 hours or until very cold.

  3. Pour mixture into bowl of an electric ice-cream maker, and process according to manufacturer's instructions. Freeze 1 hour before serving. Store up to 1 week.
