1796 Cupcakes Hit the Scene
Bearing resemblance to English Fairy Cakes, cupcake were enjoyed throughout the 17 and 18 centuries. Cupcakes as we know them were first called "light cake to bake in small cups," a true mouthful of a title.
1828 Cupcakes Become Official
The earliest written reference of the cupcake appears in Eliza Leslie's “Seventy-Five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats.”
1919 Hostess Bakes the Most-est
Hostess starts mass-producing its first snack cake-- that's right-- the cleverly named CupCake.
1950 Winston Churchill Weighs in
Winston Churchill is the first person to suggest cupcakes should be frosted. Previously, the treats were made with dried fruit, spices, or gilded lard. He later blamed cupcakes for his jowls.
